RCV-Medium, by contrast, is a lot more like a tank. The Medium will carry a pair of anti-tank missiles to counter tanks and high-velocity 30mm autocannon to kill light armored vehicles like BMPs. The Army looked at a 50mm gun, Wallace said, but the weight was too much. Weight may also limit secondary weapons: The Army wants a machinegun atop the turret, able to aim independently at quick, high-angle targets like rooftop snipers, but it may not fit on the Medium.
The Army has tested the Ripsaw while remote-controlled by a soldier in another armored vehicle up to 1 km (0.62 mi) away. Its weapon system is modified to fire remotely using the Advanced Remote Armament System (ARAS), a gun that loads its own ammunition and can swap out various types of ammunition, such as lethal and less-lethal, in just a few seconds. These capabilities allow manned vehicles to send the Ripsaw out in front of them and engage targets without exposing soldiers to threats.[5] As of March 2017, the Army was still testing the vehicle as an unmanned platform to test remote controlled weapon stations.[6]
In October 2019, Textron and Howe & Howe unveiled their Ripsaw M5 vehicle,[7] and on 9 January 2020, the U.S. Army awarded them a contract for the Robotic Combat Vehicle-Medium (RCV-M) program. Four Ripsaw M5 prototypes are to be delivered and used in a company-level to determine the feasibility of integrating unmanned vehicles into ground combat operations in late 2021.[8][9][10] It can reach speeds of more than 40 mph (64 km/h), has a combat weight of 10.5 tons and a payload capacity of 8,000 lb (3,600 kg).[11] The RCV-M is armed with a 30 mm autocannon and a pair of anti-tank missiles. The standard armor package can withstand 12.7×108mm rounds, with optional add-on armor increasing weight to up to 20 tons. If disabled, it will retain the ability to shoot, with its sensors and radio uplink prioritized to continue transmitting as its primary function.[12]
For the past five weeks, a platoon of soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division has been conducting cavalry-style combat missions using two-person crews in specially modified Bradley fighting vehicles to control robotic surrogate vehicles fashioned from M113 armored personnel vehicles in the Robotic Combat Vehicle Soldier Operational Experiment.
The platoon has operated in the rugged terrain of Fort Carson, Colorado, testing different technologies to control the robotic vehicles, sending them out hundreds of meters ahead to scout for enemy positions.
The Robotic Combat Vehicle-Light (RCV-L) program is part of the Army Futures Command's Next Generation Combat Vehicle effort. It seeks to provide soldiers in mechanized infantry and armor units with robotic "wingmen" that extend their reach and effectiveness on the battlefield. The Army hopes to have prototypes of the RCV-L as well as a heavier vehicle (the Robotic Combat Vehicle-Medium) in full testing in 2020. Two of each design will be fielded as "platoons" for testing, with the goal of wide deployment of tankbots by 2028.
The Army is not waiting for the prototypes to begin its testing of joint robot-human operations. Testing of Next Generation Combat Vehicle control systems for the robotic vehicles will begin in March, using modified Bradley Armored Fighting Vehicles configured as "Mission Enabler Technologies-Demonstrators" (MET-Ds) to control the robotic platforms. The first tests will use four automated M113 armored personnel carriers as "surrogates;" future tests will incorporate the prototype platoons along with the M113s.
The Russian army is developing its own robotic vehicles and running experiments in order to develop tactics for deploying the unmanned systems. The new tactics point to Russia's growing determination to field, on the ground and in the air, meaningful numbers of armed robots.
To pay for the robotic vehicle and other new equipment, in its 2020 budget proposal the Army asked Congress for permission to slow, shrink or cancel hundreds of other programs. The Army's $190-billion budget request, which represents an $8-billion boost compared to the branch's 2019 budget, channels $9 billion into six main development efforts, including new vehicles.
The first RCV-L received the Kongsberg CROWS-J remote-controlled combat module, which combines a 12.7-mm M2 Browning machine gun and the FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile system. The remotely controlled module is installed in traditional armored vehicles, where operators do not have to leave the armored cover to fire. In the RCV-L, it was additionally equipped with a tele-control system, which allows operators to issue commands at a great distance. The robotic platform can determine the target itself, but it will not work to open fire without the participation of the operator.
Milirem Robotics has rolled out its Type-X Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) for its first mobility tests. Unveiled in 2020, the RCV is a medium-weight autonomous armored platform, designed to provide reconnaissance and fire support for mechanized units and convoys.
Both companies hand over four test vehicles to the US Army. The four vehicles of one type form a train. Testing at train level will begin as early as March of this year. Both trains are to be combined into one company at the end of 2021 and tested together. The experiments are intended to determine whether the technology and operational concepts are currently so mature that the integration of unmanned combat vehicles in combat troops already makes sense. However, a positive result does not automatically mean that the same companies have been awarded the contract for development and series procurement.
In the summer, Oshkosh started integration of the system on 10 trucks, with the goal of sending them to the government for qualification and safety testing in early 2019. Also in early 2019, the company plans to integrate the system on 60 more vehicles so they can be sent to the government for an operational task demonstration in 2020, at the latest.
